Fort Wainwright has approximately 6,700 soldiers stationed at Fort Wainwright, and 10,250 Family Members reside with those Soldiers on post or in the surrounding community. There are 2300 Civilians and 600 Contractors working on Fort Wainwright and the installation continues to grow.

1st Brigade, 11th Airborne Division reflagged on June 6th, 2022 in a ceremony held at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, which we call home. 1st Brigade is an infantry-centric organization; we train, operate and fight in the interior of Alaska, from summer to winter. We are a light, mobile and lethal infantry unit.

Elmendorf is the largest military installation in Alaska. Its 13,130 square acres are occupied by more than 800 buildings, two runways and more than 150 miles of roads. More than 6,000 military personnel from all branches of the U.S. and Canadian armed forces are assigned to Elmendorf.

Their strategic location, superior training capabilities and dynamic relationship with the local civilian communities make Fort Wainwright and the United States Army in Alaska a significant national asset and world-class power projection platform for military operations anywhere in the world.

Since 2002, the 10th Mountain Division has been the most deployed regular Army unit.

The fort serves as Joint Force Land Component Command which supports Joint Task Force Alaska. It also provides housing for two tenants of the U.S. Army Alaska (USARAK), also known as America's Arctic Warriors, which include the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the Northern Warfare Training Center.

The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment, traditionally known as "The Old Guard," is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, serving our nation since 1784.
