Has anyone ever installed an electric water pump on a Tr7? I had planned on cranking up my 7 for the first time today, Saturday. I have been very prudent about checking everything out: compression all even and above 120, pulled distributor and spun the oil pump with a drill above 40 psi, oil was flowing through journals. I even did a pressure check on the cooling system and no leak down at 15 pounds. Thought I was good until I added antifreeze, noticed dipstick level was up. Pulled the pan plug and sure enough antifreeze came out first. In retrospect I figure the air pressure pushed the seal around the water pump shaft which gave me false hope. Now I'm pulling the water pump and have to decide if I want to replace it as a unit or try to incorporate an electric pump in the system.
Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome!
Henry

I know a guy that used a remote electric water pump on a TR7 race car. It was against the rules, so it was well hidden. He did it to gain a couple of extra HP.

I like the idea myself. But if your alternator goes out and you have to limp home on the battery, that pump will take a lot of juice. Where would you mount it?

Thanks guys for the comments! I'm in the process now of pulling the intake manifold and then the pump. My problem right now is one of getting the manifold off. The "yea whoo" who put it on last time must have used a whole tube of RTV, I've pulled the 6 bolts and can't budge the intake. I don't want to get too aggressive? Any idea would be helpful! Once I get into the pump I'll be able to evaluate the possibilities. I won't know till I get there if electric is feasible? I'm not sure what the plumbing may look like and the path it may take.
I really don't care about the HP, it's the bear of replacing a pump with a pump that may not last, that I want to do away with. Battery runs down I can handle on the road. Gears binding or breaking, from what I've read, is another story.
More to come later!
Thanks
Henry

I have installed an electric water pump kit from Australia. Elimnates OE water pump and stat, now has ECU controlled water pump and electric fan. This will take care of the head gasket issue now that I have ARP studs installed as well. Made up a blanking plug where OE waterpump was,
.pump mounted on RH inner fender inline with lower rad hose.

Perhaps we are jumping to conclusions. Assuming 15 pounds of pressure to the cooling system would be the cause of water pump failure and antifreeze in the oil pan. I wonder about that. There is a slot in the block where the water pump sits. When the seals fail the coolant goes down the side of the block. That was not part of the symptom complex posted.
I hate to say it, but since you said: "cranking up my 7 for the first time" can we presume that this is a new car to you and that you have not driven it in the past?
I would test for a failed head gasket before assuming it was the water pump that failed.
As far as removal of the intake manifold, if your car has the 6 vane early water pump there will be a short tube between it and the intake manifold. The connection there is vertical. If you try to pull the manifold off in line with the six bolts you will be stopped by that tube. It requires both pulling perpendicular to the face of the engine head and also lifting the carb side up vertically. Try alternating. Rubber mallets and wooden blocks or hand sledges with wooden blocks CAREFULLY.

Larry,
I'm not sure this was ever meant to be resolved I think Henry was looking for opinions and options and whatever the outcome he never posted it. Since his original post was almost ten years ago it's very likely he doesn't even still have the car. Threads like this are not at all unusual where they start up and after some back and forth abruptly dead end. As far as the topic itself it's one that pops up from time to time usually when someone has to replace their water pump. Personally I'll stick with the stock pump it's a bit of a pain to replace but once it's done it's not something you need to worry about for a very long time.

Boy, a lot of water has gone under that bridge. I was just fishing for ideas and to see if an electric water pump was even an option. I was having all kinds of trouble getting the water pump on the 7 engine to seal and work properly. Finally replaced everything it around it having to do with the 7s water pump and got it to hold.
Yes, I do not have the Tr7, sold it shortly after I completed the restoration. I bought to restore and play with because I had never been around a 7. It was a labor of love and interesting to work on.
My wife would ask me every week so, “remind me again why we bought the seven”.
