The main ingredient of any guacamole recipe is the avocado which is a creamy, buttery, nutty fruit that grows on trees. With 7 grams of fiber and the good kind of fat, it's a great addition to your diet. They are also high in beta-sitosterol which has been proven to lower cholesterol levels.

You can make this easy recipe and use it as a dip with your favorite chips or as a spread on sandwiches and wraps.

My favorite tool for making guacamole is Homemade Guacamole Recipe (4)my absolute favorite kitchen tool - my magic bullet! I've had blenders, juicers, and food processors, and none compare to my magic bullet, I love it!

You can make this recipe by hand, in a food processor, or in a magic bullet; whichever works for you. If you decide to use a food processor or magic bullet-like appliance, be sure to pulse and check your guacamole often to get your preferred consistency - it's easy to make it too creamy very quickly! The best suggestion I have is to pulse two to three times then check, keep doing that till you achieve the perfect consistency for your recipe.

A sure sign that avocados are a popular American food is the amount consumed on Super Bowl Sunday - 53 million pounds of avocados are used in dip recipes, on sandwiches and in salads on Super Bowl Sunday! I'm sure we're consuming almost as much during the summer months when avocados are appearing more and more in our homes and restaurants in great salad recipes and as sandwich spreads. The avocado is now even being served at quick food places like Subway.

Tips

  • Avoid browning by storing with a layer of plastic wrap pressed over the top of your guacamole before covering the dish with foil or a lid.
  • Sprinkle lime juice or lemon juice on sliced avocado to keep it from turning brown as you serve your dip.
  • Use ripe avocados.
  • After removing the pit, use a large serving spoon to scoop the avocado out of it's peel, then slice, chop or mash the avocado for your recipe.

How to Choose an Avocado

  • Lightly squeeze in your palm. If it is ripe and ready-to eat the avocado will be firm, yet have a little give.
  • A Haas avocado will be dark green or black when ripe.
  • Don't choose one with dark marks on the skin or one that is very soft.

How to Cut an Avocado

FAQs

What do restaurants put in guacamole to keep it from turning brown? ›

Editor's Tip: You may have heard a squirt of lemon or lime juice also keeps guacamole from browning. It's true—as long as you cover the entire surface of the dip with citrus juice.

Is homemade guacamole healthy? ›

Guacamole is also full of phytonutrients—health-promoting nutrients found in plants—from the avocado, including the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. It's also a good source of folate and vitamin C and provides a little potassium, too.

Can you use lemon juice instead of lime juice in guacamole? ›

I like the flavor better with lemon juice, but lime works too. If you're out of fresh lemons or limes, try using bottled lime or lemon juice. Although, freshly squeezed juice is definitely the best! Salt: Salt enhances the flavors and brings it all together.

Should guacamole have tomatoes? ›

Tomatoes are great — but not in guac.

They don't add anything other than filler. When you eat guac, what you want is creamy avocado, fresh lime, savory onion, salt, and maybe a little cilantro, if that's your thing. I'm never putting tomatoes in my guacamole and neither should you.

Why should you leave the lime out of guacamole? ›

You see, lime is a very strong acidic flavor and it can easily overpower the delicate flavor of the avocado. Instead, finely dice red onions and pickle them with lime juice for 15-30 minutes.

How far ahead can you make guacamole before it turns brown? ›

By using this simple technique, you can keep the brown at bay for about two days (maybe longer if you're lucky). Once you're ready to store the guacamole, place it in an airtight storage container. You can also use a bowl and cover it tightly with plastic wrap.

How long can homemade guac last? ›

From the second you crack open that avocado, it's a race against the clock before it goes brown. But with the right prep, you can make guacamole last in the fridge for three to four days. Planning on storing guacamole in the freezer? It should last for three to four months.

What makes guacamole unhealthy? ›

Store-bought guacamole often contains sour cream, added sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives, and a lot of sodium.

When should you not eat guacamole? ›

Although brown guacamole isn't the most appealing, it's completely safe to eat (as long as you've stored the guacamole in the refrigerator, and it isn't more than three days old).

Why put olive oil in guacamole? ›

Olive oil is rich in healthy fats and imparts a subtle richness to guacamole that makes it even more satisfying. In addition, it can help to prevent the avocado from turning brown too quickly by forming a barrier between the surface of the guacamole and the air.

What is the best onion for guacamole? ›

Most people prefer to use sweet white onion in their guacamole recipe. Red or yellow onion tends to give the guacamole too strong of a garlic flavor.

Can I eat guacamole every day? ›

A daily dose of avocado is good for your heart. Research has shown that people who eat avocados every day have higher levels of HDL, the "good" cholesterol. Avocados also may be good for your gut biome. But they're high in calories, so stick to recommended serving sizes.

Is hummus or guacamole better for you? ›

Hummus, with its chickpea base, wins with certain nutrients, like protein, zinc, and iron, while guacamole helps avocado fans slim down with fewer calories and carbs, heart-healthy fats, and potassium.

How to improve guacamole? ›

Season to Taste.

Often an additional pop of citrus is all guac needs to come alive and taste better. If you still aren't happy with the taste, you can rely on mix-ins to jazz it up. Try adding cilantro, salsa, a diced jalapeno or serrano pepper, feta cheese, or a few dashes of hot sauce.

How do you make guacamole stay good? ›

Pour a thin but visible layer of water or lemon/lime juice over the guacamole to form a barrier with the air. Cover the dish with plastic wrap, pushing the wrap, so it is flush with the guacamole to prevent air pockets, or put the guacamole in a sealed tub.

Why you should leave the lime out of guacamole? ›

You see, lime is a very strong acidic flavor and it can easily overpower the delicate flavor of the avocado. Instead, finely dice red onions and pickle them with lime juice for 15-30 minutes.

Does lemon or lime juice keep guacamole from turning brown? ›

After testing nine methods, I found that a good squeeze of lemon juice was by far the best at preventing guacamole from turning brown. Lime juice was a close second.
