Trump backs Sam Brown in US Senate race, widening momentum gap in crowded Nevada GOP field

  • GABE STERN - Associated Press

Former president Donald Trump has endorsed retired Army Capt. Sam Brown for U.S. Senate in Nevada over a crowded GOP primary field. Trump chose Brown over several other candidates with close ties to the former president including Jeff Gunter, Trump’s former ambassador to Iceland, and Jim Marchant, who ran for Nevada Secretary of State in 2022 on a platform of election denialism spurred by Trump’s false claims of widespread election fraud. Brown, a Purple Heart recipient, was heavily recruited by Republicans in Washington before announcing his run last year. Trump's endorsem*nt further lifts Brown above his opponents in terms of national backing.

Celtics take commanding 2-0 lead

Jrue Holiday had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Jayson Tatum made up for a rough shooting night with 12 assists and nine rebounds as the Boston Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks 105-98 on Sunday night to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. Luka Doncic, who was listed as questionable to play less than two hours before the opening tipoff, scored 32 points with 11 rebounds and 11 assists — the first NBA Finals triple-double in Mavericks franchise history. But he missed a one-footed, running floater from 3-point range with 28 seconds left, ending Dallas’ last chance at a comeback. Game 3 is Wednesday night in Dallas.

Top-seeded Tennessee hits 7 home runs, routs Evansville 12-1 to win super regional, spot in CWS

  • AP

Christian Moore and Dalton Bargo both hit two of Tennessee’s seven home runs, powering the top-seeded Volunteers to a 12-1 victory over Evansville in the championship game of the Knoxville Super Regional. Tennessee (55-12) advances to the College World Series for the second straight season and seventh time overall after a rain delay postponed the start for an hour. The Volunteers have never won the event, losing 3-2 to Oklahoma for the title in 1951 — the fifth CWS. Brent Widder drove in an unearned run with a two-out single in the top of the first inning to give Evansville (39-26) the lead.

Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi embarrassed after colliding with A's opponent chasing foul pop

  • By BEN ROSS - Associated Press

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Yusei Kikuchi cost his team an out by bolting from the dugout and colliding with an opponent on a bizarre play in the 10th inning of Sunday’s game against Oakland. With the Blue Jays leading 6-3 in the top of the 10th, Davis Schneider lofted a popup into foul territory near Toronto’s dugout on the first-base side at the Coliseum. Blue Jays players watching from in front of the bench scattered as Athletics first baseman Tyler Soderstrom pursued the ball. Kikuchi, attempting to get out of the way quickly, ran toward the field and crashed into Soderstrom. Both players were knocked down as the ball fell to the ground. The umpires got together and ruled Schneider out due to obstruction on an embarrassed Kikuchi.
